Design notes

An open center. A clear point of view.

Four years of shaping a reel around one idea: a recognizable form should feel as considered as it looks.

Begin with the space in the middle

A reel is usually described by what it contains. We began with what you see through it. The open center gives Fly-Fin a silhouette that reads at a glance; the rounded shell gives that silhouette a softer edge.

The idea borrows from the simplicity of a doughnut-shaped form. Translating it into a working reel meant considering the shell, the spool and the feedback mechanism together.

Two faces, two responsibilities

The front shell carries the signature curved outline and flat inscription ring. On the other side, the rotating spool carries the PEI grip and brass counterweight. No exposed screws interrupt the exterior.

The open center is a design choice, not a claim that every other reel is heavier or less capable. What matters is how the complete object comes together.

The shape has to work in the hand

The spool face and accessible rim leave room for fingertip pressure when additional control is needed. Inside, magnetic interaction and small movements of the chambered magnets create the distinctive clicking response.

Shape is the first impression. Feel is what stays with you.

Four years, in the details

The development process brought repeated adjustments to the form and magnetic arrangement. The body is CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and anodized; the PEI grip and brass counterweight bring contrasting materials to the rotating assembly.

Those choices belong to one object. The clearest way to understand it is to look at both sides, listen to it turn and explore the setup.

A distinctive shell. A magnetic character you can make your own.
